Remember that first time you fell in love with someone who didn’t want to be with you? The utter high you felt every time he looked your way and the brazen hurt of his cold shoulder? Each one of us experiences the pain of unrequited love at some point in our lives. This is the kind of love that gets you craving for someone’s affection and leaves you hurting and broken when they fail to give you the affection you want. Yet, like a moth to the light of a flame, you still go back to the unreturned affection as if you there is something else to be gained other than more hurt and pain.

 It is really sad—that agonizing feeling of unrequited love. But, what goes on in our minds when we’ve been rejected in love and yet insist on keeping on with the chase for the rejecter’s affection? Well, when you are rejected or ignored by someone you “love,” your brain shifts into autopilot and activates the part of the brain that is pure instinct, beneath emotion and logic. You desire the person almost instinctively, focus all your attention and energy on getting them, and are willing to risk it all to win their love. The mere possibility that the person you love might one day love you back keeps your attraction burning. You stay hopeful, against all odds, and willingly make a fool out of yourself in the name of “love,” often without a care what others think. The process of making a total fool out of yourself in love You do things you normally wouldn’t be found doing because you think that love will conquer all and you want to protect the fantasy world you’ve build in your mind. You spend hours in front of your computer, which has a picture of her as your wallpaper and images of her as your screensaver, trying to humor and chat her up on social networks. You like all her Facebook status updates and photos and shower her with gifts and complements in a shameless attempt to win her heart. The more you are rejected the more determined you are and the more of a total fool you make yourself. As a 2011 scientific study showed, we feel most attracted to someone when we’re not sure if they like us or not. Any shred of uncertainty only fuels our feelings of attraction. You wind up thinking about the person more often than is necessary or even healthy. Sometimes you can’t sleep or eat because you’re wondering how they feel or how you are going to attract them. You’re basically dragging your heart on the ground and having it stepped on without any sense of self-pride. Letting go is tough, but not impossible. Since unrequited love mirrors all the patterns of addiction – cravings, obsessive thinking, withdrawals, distorted reality and relapse – you literary have to force yourself to break free from your love addiction. Thankfully, breaking a love addiction is tough, but not impossible. It’s a prolonged battle between you logical brain and instinctive one. Here’re five key things you should do to break free from unrequited love and move on with your life. 1. Take an inventory of your behavior. Write down current and past actions you’ve done with regard to the person you are drawn to and consider all actions you intend to do in the future. Do you really think your actions are fitting for someone as intelligent and enlightened as you are? When you take stock of your own inappropriate behaviors and choices, you will notice just how much you’ve lost connection to yourself and handed power over to another person. This can be all the motivation you need to do whatever it takes to get your life and sanity back. 2. Accept that they’re just not that into you. Admittedly, this is not going to be easy but you absolutely need to know when to ‘cut your losses.’ Hollywood romance movies have brainwashed us to believe that with enough determination we can awaken within others a love that they themselves didn’t know existed. If only you try hard enough, you’ll get your girl or guy, right? Not always. That notion only works every time in romantic movies and fiction. If you’ve spent endless amounts of time and effort on this person with little but pain and frustration to show for it, let it go already! They’re just not that into you. Sometimes knowing when to give up is the best step forward towards a truly loving and satisfying romantic relationship. 3. Create as much distance as you possibly can. Once you realize they are just not that into you, discontinue contact with the person and create as much distance with them as possible. This includes putting an immediate stop to your texting and e-mailing them, as well as stopping the talk about what your relationship would be like if you were together. Don’t even check their Facebook page. Those little check-ins, pokes and likes only make it worse and harder to let go. 4. Poke holes in the romantic fantasy world you had built in your head. List all the negative qualities you know about the person and catalog everything you don’t know about them. Imagine quarreling over things you don’t share in common, such as political views, childcare and finances. This will help you bring your crush down from the high pedestal you had placed them and begin to see her for what she really is—a human being with flaws just like any other person. 5. Immerse yourself in activities that engage you physically, emotionally and intellectually.   Rejection chips away at our self-esteem. Moving on from it will take some distraction and an ego boost. Do activities you love that engage you physically, emotionally and intellectually, such as traveling, playing a favorite sport or volunteering for a cause you believe in. These activities can help you feel more confident about yourself, detach you from the person you dote on and create opportunities for you to meet new people. However, be careful to avoid engaging in any potentially romantic interactions for at least six months in order to allow yourself to heal properly. Don’t forget:  Thoughts stemming from feelings of unrequited love that say it is all or nothing are wrong. Your life is not meaningless without that person. There are other people out there who are ready to love you back. You will be sad, lonely and frustrated at times, but in the end you will find the most valuable gift of all—true love. You’ll know once you have found the real thing because it will flow in both directions.

 We were praying for someone who was cheating on his wife. And I was struck by what one person said in his prayer: "Lord, work in his heart so that he will think less about the pleasure he is experiencing and more about the pain he is causing." That seemed quite appropriate to me. A spouse who is caught up in adultery is living only for the moment, caught up in a fantasy of excitement and desire, and ignoring the very real consequences. Recently a seminary paper came across my desk titled "100 Consequences of Adultery," written by Philip Jay, a student at Phoenix Seminary.  It's a pretty sobering list, isn't it? What's even more sobering is that many people will consider these consequences and still proceed in their sin. The fantasy is more important to them than the reality. Also note that, though the list reflects a man's perspective, nearly all the consequences would also apply to a wife committing adultery. The biggest benefit of this list may be in helping all of us realize the need to set up strict safeguards to ensure that we are faithful in our marriage commitment. If I am convinced of what adultery would do to me and to my family, I will watch my wandering eyes, guard my thought life, and avoid any situations that could put me in harm's way. The fantasy is just not worth it.

When Your Marriage Is Dying

They panic at the thought of exposing their battered hearts to another potential beating. They're certain they can't face another rejection or betrayal. Sadly, few people are taught how to guard their heart and require trust to be re-earned when the covenant has been broken. They're so determined to avoid being vulnerable, they won't entertain thoughts of reconciliation. Yet, even marriages that have gradually decayed over many years can be restored.

 Let me state clearly that I detest divorce; the devastation involved is heart-wrenching. I firmly believe it should be avoided if at all possible. I am totally committed to marital restoration and would dance a jig if a "going out of business" sign could be hung on my divorce-recovery ministry. However, the reality is that it takes two people to get married and only one to get divorced. And herein lies the problem. For the person who wants the marriage to be restored, the most perplexing question is "How do I know when to accept the fact that my spouse does not want this marriage and recognize this as reality in my life?" Most church leaders, parents, pastors, family members, and individuals seek a "formula" to answer this question. Unfortunately, there is no such recipe because each situation is unique and should be addressed as such. However, there are some essential steps couples must take if reconciliation is to be successful. First, both spouses must be one hundred percent willing to do the hard work necessary to repair the marriage. The journey will be challenging, exasperating, and at times painful, but the results are worth it. Second, if one or both spouses has had an intimate relationship (physical or emotional) with a third party, all communication with that person—phone calls, letters, e-mails, or visits—must end. If the third party is a co-worker, a job change should seriously be considered. Third, both parties must be willing to go to counseling. The couple should take time to find the right Christian counselor, someone who is qualified to deal with the issues they're struggling with such as adultery, addiction, or abuse. Finding the right counselor is like buying a pair of shoes; sometimes you have to try on several pairs before you find the right fit. Fourth, restoring a marriage takes time. Rushing the process and avoiding or downplaying painful issues can lead to separation and divorce. It's tragic when a marriage that could have been reconciled is destroyed because the root cause was never treated. A marriage can't be restored if only one person wants reconciliation, but that doesn't mean you should give up hope. Just because your spouse isn't willing to reconcile today doesn't mean he or she will never consider it. God understands how hard it is to pray life into a dead marriage. He will give you strength and wisdom and knowledge of what to pray. He will help you know when you should pursue reconciliation and when you should accept that the marriage is irreconcilable. "Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know" (Jeremiah 33:3 NASB). The other day my wife came home from work and said she's leaving me because she doesn't love me anymore. I'm stunned that my marriage might be over. I don't want it to end. What can I do? I know this is a fierce blow, but do your best to calmly ask your wife to give you a more in-depth answer as to why she's leaving you. Be careful about how you react to her rejection. Angry outbursts won't help you reconcile the marriage. Neither will self-pity, whining, clinging, begging, or threats of suicide. Getting even by dating or having an affair also won't work. Those behaviors communicate to your wife that she is off the hook. As an added bonus, they relieve her guilt because she then feels justified in leaving. You can tell your wife that although you're deeply hurt, you're willing to learn from her where you may have failed the marriage. Ask for reconciliation, but recognize that she might not respond positively at first. Explain why you believe there is hope for your marriage and the steps you're willing to take to improve the relationship. Share with your wife that you value the marriage so deeply you're willing to go for counseling. You can't force her to agree to reconciliation, but you can encourage the decision and you can pray. One consideration: I've observed that people having an affair often ease their conscience by saying, "I don't love you anymore" or "I'm just not happy," rather than saying, "I'm leaving you for someone new." If your wife is having either an emotional or physical affair, you'll need to see a counselor. My husband left, and I can't afford our huge house. My friends tell me to sell it, but I'm afraid that will destroy any chances of restoring our marriage. Won't selling the house communicate to my husband that I've given up? It's normal to assume losing the home you shared will end any hope of restoring the marriage, but it's unfounded. View the sale as a good thing. If finances were an issue in the separation, then downsizing might relieve one stress factor. Remember, reconciling doesn't mean going back to the way things were; it means starting fresh. I had a yearlong affair. I've asked my wife to forgive me, but she says she can't ever trust me again. Is there a way to get my wife back? The cliché "actions speak louder than words" is true. Words aren't enough to prove your repentance. For there to be hope, your wife will need to see over a period of time that you're a changed man. Communicate your sincerity by doing the following:

<li style="background: 0px 0px; border: 0px; line-height: 1.5; list-style: none; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; transition: all 0s ease; vertical-align: baseline;">Get into a Christian men's accountability group.</li>
<li style="background: 0px 0px; border: 0px; line-height: 1.5; list-style: none; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; transition: all 0s ease; vertical-align: baseline;">Read books such as The Man in the Mirror by Patrick Morley, which address men's issues.</li>
<li style="background: 0px 0px; border: 0px; line-height: 1.5; list-style: none; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; transition: all 0s ease; vertical-align: baseline;">Practice humility. Don't demand, manipulate, or try to control your wife's actions or feelings.</li>
<li style="background: 0px 0px; border: 0px; line-height: 1.5; list-style: none; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; transition: all 0s ease; vertical-align: baseline;">Admit that you've demonstrated that you're untrustworthy. Mention concrete ways—such as meeting with the pastor, giving her access to your e-mail, and not traveling alone—in which you're willing to be held accountable so that trust can be rebuilt. Let your wife make suggestions, too.</li>
<li style="background: 0px 0px; border: 0px; line-height: 1.5; list-style: none; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; transition: all 0s ease; vertical-align: baseline;">Pray for God to soften her heart.</li>

 If you do divorce, remain faithful to your marriage covenant and continue to pray for restoration. If your wife remarries, then there is nothing more you can do. My friends tell me I need to forgive my ex-husband, but I don't think I need to until he asks to be forgiven. He deserves to suffer for what he did to me. Why should I forgive him when he has never admitted he was wrong? Forgiveness isn't a fun process, but if you want to mend, it's vital. "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins" (Matthew 6:14-15). Notice God says nothing about waiting until you feel like forgiving or that you only have to grant forgiveness if the person asks for it. God expects you to take the first step, beginning with a willing heart. The ability to pardon another person comes from God, not your own strength. He will help you. Your role is to surrender and desire His way above your own. This may take time, especially if the offenses were severe. Walk toward forgiveness—the initial step is the hardest. Here are some nonsexual ways to cherish your bride through words and acts of affirmation. Meet Don. Don is a basketball "nut." He's the kind of sports buff who can talk nonstop about his favorite basketball teams with anybody who'll listen. One evening, Don's wife took a seat next to him on the couch. She placed her arms around his neck and asked him point-blank: "Do you love me more than basketball?"

 Puzzled, Don considered her question for a long minute before answering. He finally said, "College or NBA?" While most of us men would never make a blunder of that magnitude, we often miss the opportunity to affirm our wives. Marriage is not a spectator sport. Nor is it a place for verbal jabs or cynical put-downs. Those male digs might work in the locker room with the boys, but they're out of bounds with our wives. What do Don's wife, your wife, and my wife need? Affirmation. Lots of it. Soft, tender, thoughtful, unexpected, meaningful, heartfelt affirmation delivered with no sexual demands attached. That's difficult for a man, I know. A man usually sets goals and generally acts only when he is after something. When it comes to romance, he's tempted to give affirmation only because he hopes to "get sex" in return. You and I will score big when we make our goal unconditional affirmation—no strings attached. My aim is to make my wife feel loved, valued, cherished, and affirmed as the love of my life. We all would do well to watch Solomon in action. Solomon, by contrast, referred to his wife as "my beloved" forty times in the Song of Solomon. That choice phrase is packed with affirmation. It's a romantic expression, a call to rich friendship. Each time Solomon said, "My beloved," his words clothed her with dignity and value. What woman wouldn't flourish under such a constant stream of loving affirmation? Here are thirty nonsexual ways to cherish your bride through words and acts of affirmation. And by the way, these are nonsexual so that you speak her romantic love language. It's important to remember that you are not doing these things to get something in return. Perhaps she will reciprocate in your language back to you, but that's not your goal. Are you ready? 1. Hug and kiss her every morning before leaving the house. Research indicates that marriages that practice this simple discipline are much healthier than those that don't. If she's sleeping, leave her a note, or gently kiss her forehead and whisper, "Have a wonderful day, sweetheart." 2. Reach across the front seat of the car when you drive and hold her hand, even for a few moments. Allow your fingers to become entwined. 3. Write, "I'm crazy about you, Honey. You're the best!" or another personal message on a yellow sticky note. Attach it to her bathroom mirror. 4. Call her from work and say, "I've been thinking of how good I have it with you in my life. Thanks for all that you are as a woman and all that you do for me and our family." 5. The next time you get a pair of tickets to a ball game, theater, or concert that she'd like to go to, make a sacrifice. Instead of going with a buddy, tuck them in her purse with a note saying, "You deserve a night off. Have fun with a girlfriend." 6. Go an entire day without criticizing anything about her. Instead, try to notice her doing something that you really appreciate, and tell her how much you value her. 7. Go to bed at the same time with her for a week; just talk or read a book and share the quietness together. Or play a card game that you used to play when you dated or were just married. 8. Brush her hair and compliment her hair and eyes. 9. While she studies her face in the mirror, come up behind her and gently kiss the back of her neck. Say, "God broke the mold after He made you. You are so beautiful." 10. Call her or send her an e-mail midafternoon and ask her how her day is going. 11. Try your hand at making breakfast on Saturday morning. Tell her she deserves a break and should feel free to sleep in. 12. Take her car to the gas station, fill the tank, vacuum the floor mats, and clean the windows. When you park it at the house, leave a note on the dash with just a heart and the words, "Thinking of you." 13. Write her a short love letter in which you list several ways that she has blessed you this year. 14. Resurrect common courtesies. Start opening the car door for her as you did when you dated, pull out her chair for her at the dinner table, offer your arm while walking down stairs, and help her put her coat on. 15. If she's doing the laundry, pull yourself away from whatever you're doing and offer to bring the hamper. 16. Put the toilet seat down when you're finished, and wash your hands. I'd estimate that 40 percent of men don't. Our wives do know. Stroking her face after you've been to the bathroom suddenly loses its romantic appeal! 17. Put down the newspaper or turn off the computer, and say, "Why don't we go for a walk and talk? I'd love to hear about your day." 18. If you overhear her engaged in a difficult situation on the phone or with a child, compliment the way she handled the conversation. 19. Initiate daily prayer with her. This one spiritual discipline has transformed millions of marriages. Make a commitment, and then begin to pray together every day. Begin by giving thanks for her and your family, then pray with her about her worries and challenges. Ask her to pray for you about a challenge you are facing. 20. Say, "Thank you," after every meal she serves. Then help her clear the table or offer to do the dishes with her. 21. If she has wrestled with a specific spiritual issue (such as gossip, envy, a lack of compassion), tell her how much you appreciate her desire to handle it in a godly manner. 22. Express appreciation for her doing the laundry and folding your clothing. 23. Each day try to say, "I love the way you _______ ," and fill in the blank with something you've observed. 24. When your wife irons your shirts or picks up the dry cleaning, say, "Thanks, Honey, for taking such good care of me." 25. When the alarm goes off in the morning, wrap your arm around her, press your body next to hers, and cuddle for several minutes. When you leave, say, "I wish I didn't have to go." 26. The next time you go to dinner, say, "You've had a tough day, Sweetie. Why don't you pick the spot tonight?" 27. When you are together in a crowd, find a way to brag on her. Say, "My wife is such an amazing cook," or "I've got the best wife—her ______ never ceases to amaze me." 28. The morning after making love, touch her tenderly, and tell her how wonderful it was to be with her. 29. With your wife in the room, tell your kids, "You've got the best mommy in the world. Isn't she great? I just love her so much." 30. Help her put the kids to bed each night. For some men, the thought of affirming their wives sounds like a lot of work. Others are anxious about being so vulnerable with displays of affirmation. Whatever the reason, they hesitate to step out and pursue the call to love found in Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV): "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her." If you've hesitated affirming your bride, or if you've been slow to praise her qualities, trust me on this: just do it. Affirming your wife through even just three or four of these ideas will do wonders for your romance. Is that too difficult to believe? You'll never know unless you try, right?

What's in your breakfast bowl? Learn what to look for when shopping for cereals

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it's best to know what to reach for before sitting down with that bowl of cereal. Registered dietitian Jackie London helped TODAY cut through the hype found on so many cereal boxes. London, the Good Housekeeping nutrition director, deciphered many of the packaging claims and provided guidance on what to look for on labels so that consumers can make healthier choices when shopping for breakfast items. 1. Keep an eye on portion control. There is no standard serving size for cereal, London said. Instead, look for cereals that list between a half- to a full-cup of cereal per serving. If the cereal has a higher density, such as granola-based or high-fiber varieties, lean toward the smaller serving size. The goal is to consume between 350-400 calories, which should be enough energy to stave off hunger cravings for the rest of the morning. 2. Ignore “no artificial” ingredients claims. “This is a bit of a misnomer,” London said. Those claims must meet specific definitions set by the federal Food and Drug Administration, so they’re not wrong — technically. “If you’re looking to get some extra wholesome, nutritious food into your diet and you’re looking to eat more real food, you’re not going to get that from a processed cereal,” she said. Instead, look for cereals that list whole grains such as wheat or oats as your first item. Also look for shorter ingredient lists.
